Job Description:

RESEARCH ASSISTANTS (2 POSITIONS AVAILBLE):

GRANT-FUNDED PROJECT ON GUN VIOLENCE (MASS SHOOTINGS)

The Rockefeller Institute of Government (the Institute), part of the State University of New York (SUNY), is seeking to hire two (2) research assistants (graduate students preferred but will consider advanced undergraduates) to assist on a federally funded research project examining mass shootings and warning communications / behaviors. These positions are expected to begin on or about October 1, 2024, and continue through June 30, 2025. Positions may extend beyond that date, contingent upon availability of funding. These positions will be established under the grant award with SUNY's Research Foundation.

Research assistants will be expected to work 20 hours per week, with the exception of holidays, though scheduling is flexible. This is a hybrid position: research assistants will be able to work remotely but will be expected to attend in-person training and regular team check-in meetings at the Institute (located at 411 State Street, Albany NY.)

Job Duties:

Research assistants will assist the project's investigators with data collection and coding for the project. This will include completing and submitting Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests to law enforcement agencies and courts across the U.S., cataloging and coding data received, and creating case narrative summaries. Pending timing and the availability of funding, research assistants may have the opportunity to assist with data analysis. Training will be provided for all project-related tasks.

Qualifications:
  • Must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree-granting program at A SUNY school, and in full-time status for the duration of the appointment.
  • Must have excellent writing, organizational, interpersonal, and research skills.
  • Well-organized, dependable, a critical thinker, and demonstrate accuracy and attention to detail and be able to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Experience with the Microsoft Office suite of products (e.g., Word, Excel).
  • Experience with data analysis programs (e.g., NVivo, SPSS) is preferred but not required.

Those with a background in criminal justice, homeland security, sociology, psychology, political science, and/or public policy are strongly encouraged to apply, though students with all majors will be considered.
