The Nonprofit Institute (NPI) was founded in 2002 in the School of Leadership and Education Sciences (SOLES) at the University of San Diego (USD) to provide research, technical consulting, convening, and training to develop transformational community leaders and organizations. Based in one of the oldest leadership schools in the country, NPI is nationally renowned for its programs to: help values-driven leaders connect, learn and advance social good and community; empower nonprofits by activating their greatest assets - their people; and provide the research, evaluation and services these organizations need to make sustainable and lasting impact with the communities they serve.

Detailed Description:
This is a full-time temporary, benefit-based position with an anticipated end date of June 30, 2025. The appointment is renewable at the discretion of the University and dependent upon performance and continued funding.

The Assistant Director of Research will lead and support research projects and related activities undertaken by NPI, including designing, implementing, and reporting quantitative and qualitative research and program evaluations. This role will also be responsible for training and overseeing graduate research assistants, as well as facilitating training and professional development in applied research and evaluation for the nonprofit sector. In addition, they will support the Senior Director of Research and Evaluation in securing research funding. This is a full-time temporary position renewable on an annual basis.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Research and Evaluation Activities
  • Supports the Director of Research by leading and managing action-oriented research projects
    • Including: research protocols related to IRBs, proposal development and submission, research design, survey design, data analysis, project management, and production of reports, presentations and other deliverables
  • Oversees the work of graduate research assistants and consultants on related research projects
  • Oversees the production of publications with the assistance of the Senior Director of Research and Evaluation and assorted researchers
  • Works directly with community members to integrate culturally responsive evaluation approaches
  • Models and ensures highest level of research ethics and applied research quality
  • Collaborates with team to ensure master databases and research files are accurately maintained and up-to-date
  • Develops and presents research at targeted academic and professional conferences

Research Training and Support
  • Facilitate training and professional development in applied research and evaluation for the nonprofit sector. This may include sessions hosted by NPI and/or external partners.
  • Review and enhance standards of uniformity, consistency, quality, and branding in NPI research methods, protocols, templates and best practices
  • Train and support graduate students and/or research assistants in established research methods and data collection and analysis protocols

Administration and Business Development
  • In conjunction with Senior Director of Research and Evaluation, manage project traffic flow, timelines, budgets, and deliverables as assigned
  • In conjunction with Senior Director of Research of Evaluation, liaison with IRB (Institutional Review Board)
  • Research funding sources for creation and sustainability of research projects to establish relationships and new projects and revenue streams

Job Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Masters degree in a social science or a related field with an emphasis on evaluation or research methods
  • At least five years experience writing and producing research reports for both academic and practitioner audiences
  • Demonstrated experience with a range of research and evaluation methodologies, including quantitative and qualitative approaches to data collection and analysis, and relevant software
  • Strong background in survey methods including survey design, data analysis, and summarizing findings
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience in managing multiple projects and agendas
  • Ability to remain flexible with job responsibilities
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to organize and manage conflicting goals and agendas
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms)

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Doctoral degree in a social science or a related field (nonprofit or public administration, education, sociology, etc.)
  • 6-8 years experience producing research reports for both academic and practitioner audiences
  • Background in nonprofit/philanthropic studies, environment, or education preferred
  • Demonstrated experience in culturally responsive evaluation methods
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with a wide array of people
  • Familiarity with qualitative and quantitative research software including SPSS, Qualtrics, etc.
  • Fluency in Spanish

Posting Salary:
$6,666.67 -$7,500 per month; Excellent Benefits

The salary range provided in this posting reflects what we reasonably expect to pay for this position. Actual compensation offered or earned is dependent on experience, education and other factors including departmental budget.
